EC asks political parties to follow guidelines for using AI

Patna, Oct 9 (UNI) The Election Commission today directed the political parties to andhere to the relevant guidelines on the use of AI for synthetic videos targeting rival parties and candidates.
Sources at the election office said here that along with the model code of conduct, the parties must comply with the guidelines about the use of AI during the electrical campaign. The provisions also apply to the content being posted on the internet, including social media by candidates and political parties.
Referring to the provision of the code, the source said that criticism of other parties when made shall be confined to their policies and programmes, past records and work. Parties and candidates shall refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life not connected with the public activities of the leaders or workers of other parties.
Criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion must be avoided.
The sources said the Commission has advised the parties against misuse of AI-based tools to create deep fakes that distort information or propagate misinformation over social media platforms and emphasised the need to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
All political parties and their leaders, candidates and star campaigners will also take necessary measures for prominent labeling of Al-generated synthetic content, if any, being shared for campaigning through their social media platforms or in the form of advertisements using clear notations such as 'Al-Generated', 'Digitally Enhanced', or 'Synthetic Content'.
The sources said strict watch on social media posts is being kept to ensure that the election atmosphere is not vitiated.
The Commission has made elaborate arrangements for ensuring the effective implementation of the code guidelines. Any violation of these guidelines will be dealt with strictly, it said.
